IS IT FOR ME?

WEDDING CATERERS

Many people think that throwing together and few rolls, sandwiches and nibbles for a function is a simple affair that almost anyone could pull-off. That’s simply not the case. There is a lot more involved to outside catering than initially meets the eye, and to build a successful business requires both culinary skills and business acumen.

It’s not a surprise that your success will depend largely on your culinary skills. Customers’ tastes are evolving and their palates are becoming more complex.  As a result, your menu, depending on your customers, might need to be a little more creative than cheese sticks and egg-mayo sandwiches (some of the food items many associate with catered food).

Serving-up good quality, tasty meals and entrees for groups of 100+ is not a simple task. Even medium size catering firms that employ a head chef to oversee food preparation rely on the experience of catering management to make a success of such an event. There’s much more going on behind the scenes than just cooking and serving.

There are many business related tasks that will have to be handled effectively in order to run a successful catering company. You will need to have good organisational skills, implement proper budget management and have excellent interpersonal skills.  A general overview of how catering systems work is also strongly advised.

If you are lacking in any of these skills you can acquire them by taking either a University degree in catering systems, or a vocational college course such as an NVQ in Catering & Hospitality. There are also catering colleges that specialise in catering education.
